Frequently Asked Questions – Nicholas and Son Septic Service

At Nicholas and Son Septic Service, we understand that maintaining your septic system can raise many questions. Our team is here to provide clear, helpful answers to keep your system running at its best.

Why is my high-water alarm sounding?

If your high-water alarm goes off, it’s usually a sign your lift station pump isn’t working correctly. This could be caused by a malfunctioning pump, a bad float switch, electrical problems, or other issues stopping the pump from turning on. If the water level in your lift station is above the pump, it likely means the system isn’t pumping properly.

What are the signs of a failing septic system?

Watch for these red flags:

  • Wet or soggy spots in the yard or near the leach field
  • Slow drains or gurgling noises
  • Trouble flushing toilets
  • Strong septic odors
  • Lush, green grass over your drain field

If you notice any of these signs, give us a call right away.

Why are my drains gurgling?

Gurgling noises from your drains can mean the main sewer line is clogged, or your septic tank is too full. It could also point to poor venting in the plumbing system. Either way, it’s best to have it checked before it turns into a bigger problem.

How often should I have my septic tank pumped?

We recommend pumping every 2 to 3 years under normal conditions. If you use a garbage disposal often or have a large household, you might need pumping every 1 to 2 years. Regular maintenance is the key to preventing issues.

What is the typical lifespan of a septic system?

A well-maintained system can last 20 to 30 years—or even longer. Longevity depends on factors like installation quality, soil type, usage, and how regularly it’s serviced.

How close do you need to get to the septic tank for service?

Our trucks are equipped with hoses that reach up to 200 feet. If your tank is farther out, we can usually accommodate with longer hoses, though there may be an additional charge.

Can I use a garbage disposal with my septic system?

You can, but we don’t recommend it for frequent use. Garbage disposals add solid waste that doesn’t break down easily, which can lead to more frequent pumping and strain on your system.

Is it safe to plant trees near my septic system?

Not really. Trees and shrubs with aggressive roots can damage your tank or drain field pipes. Avoid planting within 10 feet of the system, and keep any spiky or thorny plants away from access points to ensure safe maintenance.

Can I flush wet wipes?

Nope. Even so-called “flushable” wipes can clog pipes, damage components, and fill your tank faster. Toss them in the trash instead.

Is it okay to drive over my leach field?

Only lightweight equipment like lawn mowers should go over your leach field. Heavier vehicles can compact the soil and damage pipes, especially when the ground is soft.
